BJ The Chicago Kid - Civil Scope

You’ve been releasing new songs almost every week. Are you preparing to release a new project?

BJ The Chicago Kid: Yeah I can’t tell you too much about it, just leaving out of this meeting. But a few things came about that are pretty incredible that we want to hone into. I definitely have some more surprises up my sleeve before we deliver the big boom.

How have you grown since dropping Pineapple Now and Laters?

BJ The Chicago Kid: I’ve grown a lot, personally and musically. Pineapple Now and Laters was a very mature project as far as the feel and vibe of it. Since then I’ve worked with everybody from Dr. Dre to ScHoolboy, a lot has changed, just growing and learning. I’m one of the guys still doing my homework, going on Youtube and look up a song I haven’t heard in a while and getting lost into it and on the computer for three hours. That’s how that inspiration for Pineapples came, letting your imagination, creativity and God carry you.

I always leave room for God, even if I’m talking about sex in the song. Because I know this lyric and everything is my gift in general. Sometimes, I don’t know what I want to do in a studio. I’m not one of the artist who learns how a song is cut and sing it like the writer. I am the singer. I am the writer. I am the co-producer.

What is it that works well with you on collaborations on TDE?

BJ The Chicago Kid: We had time to work on it. We’ve been working on it for years before people learned to know what TDE is to offer and give them. We never care about what’s going on in the world. We all come from an earnest place of music, we trust what we know and do what we do.

There is a lot of good R&B artists, do you feel like their is competition?

BJ The Chicago Kid: It’s a healthy competition of everybody wanting to give good music. Mike was cool with Magic. Magic cool with Larry Bird. Off the court we all homies, but we all want to make good music. That’s kind of what Kendrick was saying, even on the joint with Big Sean. Everybody feel the same way, we all want to be great.

In October of next year, when you look back what difference do you want to see?

BJ The Chicago Kid: More BJ man, more BJ. A cool analogy to use is if you were to take a ball and sprinkle a drop of water on it, that’s today. But I would love for that ball to be fully submerged in water a year from now.
