What do you think is your strongest asset as a rapper?
AW: Honestly, my sound. Just the way I construct my music, on some real shit. My whole thing is just doing what I think is cool and trust in my taste and always trying to grow. Listening to new things, trying to take inspiration from new places so that every thing that I do is new. Really my whole outlook, just the way I approach it, is my biggest asset. It hasn’t failed me yet.
There’s two different types of artists. There’s the artists who have their aesthetic and their “ you either like it or fuck you” type of thing, which is also very admirable. But then there’s also the person who’s just constantly growing and constantly evolving, and that’s more what I am.
You’re really popular in Chicago. When it comes to the brand, are you trying to branch out more?
I have no interest in the local guy kind of thing. That’s lame to me. Also, I don’t make music for people specifically in Chicago. I don’t know if that’s going to be taken the wrong way, but with the Internet, we live in the world. We live in Chicago but we’re not limited to anywhere. We’re the first generation of citizens to the world and I think that’s amazing. I mean, my song “Vibration” is huge in France. I don’t want to be put in a geographical box. I’m just more ambitious than that. I’m going to be bigger than that.
What’s up next?
I’m about to drop a few more visuals off of my album, Village Party over the next few months. Then new music, touring again. I’m about to start dropping merch, I’ve been designing merch. People have been waiting for my merch for a long time, I’ve never done merch for the past few years I’ve been out because I didn’t want to do it half-assed. I also wanted to do it myself, essentially. And I never had quite the time or knew what I was doing. I want anything creative that has my name on it to be done by me and be approached the same way that I approach my music.
