Lauryn Hill Demands Respect On Stage After Showing Up Late
by Staff Editor
Lauryn Hill demands one thing– respect –and while on stage at Chicago’s House of Blues last week she let everyone in attendance know it.
A member of the audience at Hill’s show in Chicago apparently flipped her off and said some disrespectful things she didn’t like. In response, Lauryn let the entire crowd know that she demands respect and asked for the gentleman to be escorted out and given his money back.
“When I get up on this stage, don’t be disrespectful. Seriously, you can go. You can go, I would prefer that. You’re gonna mess this up for the rest of these people. “
“I don’t play that. I don’t need to win you over and you don’t need to win me over. You can go and you can take all your money right back. I do this because I love it, not because I owe you anything, do you understand? I do this because I love it and you can get on your blogs, Tweet, whatever you want to. I don’t give a rat’s ass.”
The most ironic thing about the incident is that Hill was apparently almost an hour late on stage and then rushed through her performance leading to a line of people outside also asking for a refund, according to TMZ.
Some people feel that respect is a two-way street.
This is of course utter bullshit. She didn’t rush through her show. She changed the tempo of some of the numbers to keep the show fresh with no new material in what is essentially a ridiculously solid greatest hits tour. While the early weeks of this tour last fall were pretty loose as the band found its way in an elaborately orchestrated show with countless improvised changes and tempo shifts, they have gelled into a joyful and powerful unit. If all you want out of a live hop hop soul set is rote repitition of a twenty year old album stay home and put your iPod on shuffle. This tour is a resurrection and a creative tour de force, not a memorization exercise of the old school days of Ms. Hill’s miseducation.
