Civil Court: Will Bobby Shmurda Become A One-Hit Wonder?
by Staff Editor
LINDSEY: By now, nearly everyone in America has probably heard of the shmoney dance, or even tried it. Bobby Shmurda is on top of the world right now, as he’s just been signed to Epic Records, and his track “Hot N***a” is played multiple times at parties since it’s so highly requested. Shoot, even rappers and celebs are trying out the Shmoney dance themselves. But could this be another case of the Soulja Boy’s “Crank That”, or DJ Webstar’s “Chicken Noodle Soup”? I pray not, but there is that potential.
Yes, Shmurda does have a bit more lyrical ability on him than most brand new artists making hot songs, but can he match-up with newer rappers who have multiple hits like YG, Mac Miller or Schoolboy Q?
The co-sign from Jay Z during his On The Run Tour is enough proof that Bobby has made his mark. While the one-hit wonders of the world have mostly come and gone to sometimes never be heard from again, they do have an importance in music, especially hip-hop. Whether Bobby Shmurda shows that he has another smash hit in his song vault or not, he is proof that the youngin’ come-up is, in fact, very real. He is evidence that kids anywhere with the right spirit, energy, and determination can work to get the world to sing their lyrics and bust their moves.
I would hate to see Shmurda become another one of “that rapper with that really hot song” since it’s clear he has a lot of potential. But without the proper marketing, future musical choices, and artist co-signs, he could end up in that position. All I can hope for right now, as I do the Shmoney dance, is that Bobby will prove my theory wrong.
