SZA isn’t too proud of her college experience but the only way to force her parents to realize she wanted to pursue singing was to fail out her last semester. Starting out at Delaware State University studying marine biology, TDE’s first lady talks her road to TDE with The Breakfast Club.

An unlikely meeting with Punch led to a close friend putting the New Jersey native on the spot where she froze up. “I just went back to class, back to my regular life,” SZA said. “Every once and a while I would do a song and send it to him and he’d be like ‘this is really tight and eventually fast forward a year I decided to make real music. Super casual he was like you trying to fly out or what?”
