Civil Interview: The Breakfast Club Talks Revolt TV, Summer Albums and Why Drake Should Respond to Jay Z
by Staff Editor
What are your favorite recent album releases?
Charlamagne Tha God: I like YG’s new My Krazy Life. That’s my favorite album right now. That’s what I’m bumpin’ right now. All day everyday, that’s what I’ve been on for the past couple of weeks. I was on ScHoolboy Q for a little moment. I like his album, but I really like YG’s album. Favorite track is “When I’m Gone.”
DJ Envy: I like Troy Ave. I’ve been listening to a lot of Troy Ave, I’ve been listening to Rick Ross’ album, too. I was in L.A. for a couple of weeks and I heard a lot of YG, a lot of Nipsey, so it gives you that experience when you’re on that coast. You hear it differently when you’re out there.
Which albums are you looking forward to that are dropping soon?
Charlamagne Tha God: Iggy Azalea. I want to hear what she does. I want to hear what Nicki does this year, too. I’m interested to see what Nicki Minaj does this go around. She’s in an interesting space.
DJ Envy: I want to see Nicki, I want to see how Lil’ Wayne’s project does, too.
Angela Yee: I’m interested to hear The Carter V also. Diddy, we can’t wait to see.
Charlamagne Tha God: I am not interested in a new Diddy album. Puff Daddy, I don’t care what he calls himself I am not interested in any new Diddy.
DJ Envy: I’m interested to hear the Puffy album because I like when other people shit on a person. Puff is that one person you never say it’s not going to happen; he always has a way of making something happen. Whether it was his album Last Train to Paris, whether it was his liquor, whether it was this Revolt shit–Puff is the type that does the shit that nobody else could do. That’s why I like listening to Puff.
Charlamagne Tha God: Diddy has records I like. He has one of the greatest verses to the world to me on that Future remix “Same Damn Time,” but I do not want to hear a Puffy album.
Angela Yee: I’m also interested to what Lil Boosie comes out with. We definitely want to keep our eyes open for that.
Which artists do you expect to take over this summer?
DJ Envy: I heard Jay is secretly working on another album and that’ll be good. I think Drake has a lot to prove this time around. Because people have been saying he sings too much, I think Drake is going to do a rap album.
Charlamagne Tha God: You know what, I’m looking for Kendrick. He got to hit a home run.
Angela Yee: Future got some songs and Wale I don’t know when he’s coming out with his album but I look forward to that as well.
I know ya’ll have heard Jay Z call Drake out on that “We Made It” remix. Do ya’ll think there should be a response?
DJ Envy: He better. This is hip hop.
Angela Yee: I think he should. It’s hard to let someone go at you like that and not respond. He might try to do some subliminals as well, but I don’t think Drake wants real problems with Jay Z. Obviously, they’re cool with each other to a certain degree, so I don’t think it’s anything that serious. But I think Jay expects him to take a shot back.
Charlamagne Tha God: I don’t think he will because I think Drake knows he was wrong. See it wasn’t like the Kendrick thing, where Kendrick called him out on “Control” and that just came from kind’ve left field. Drake knows he shouldn’t been talking off the record like that about Jay because Jay wouldn’t talk off the record like that about him. So Jay just spanked him a little. ‘You talk off the record about me, it went public, so I just tapped you a little bit in public.’ I think Drake knows he’s wrong and he’s going to stay in his place.
