Everybody loved the Versace jumpsuit you wore in the “I Luh Ya Papi” video, which seemed like a nod to the iconic Versace dress you wore at the 2000 Grammys. Was that planned?

Jennifer Lopez: It was one of those things that happened on accident. We knew we were going to do this idea of rap videos and I was going to be the rapper. We started thinking of all those things rappers do in classic hip-hop videos and one of the things was that they always wore those Versace shirts. So I was like, make sure you get Versace for me and the two girls to wear.

You nailed it. The entire video was super flossy, but the one thing that stuck out was the Nae Nae. Whose idea was it to do the dance?

J. Lo: It was our choreographer JR. He was like, ‘I want you to do the Nae Nae in this,’ and I was like, really? But he loved it.

It added a touch of youthfulness and fun to the vid. Plus, the song features French Montana. There sounds like so much chemistry there.

J. Lo: That’s the way how it happens sometimes. They come in and you really vibe and hit it off, and some you’re just like that was alright. I thought French would be perfect for “Same Girl” because he’s from the Bronx, so I called him and said ‘I want you to do probably a remix to this song.’ He loved it and asked what else I was doing. So I played him some other stuff I was doing for the album and he was like, ‘Oh my God, I want to get on ‘Papi.'”

It definitely just clicked. Detail produced this track, and on Ellen you mentioned how he micro-managed how you sang the words. What are some of the things you’re very detailed about in your music and in your work?

J. Lo: I micro-manage everything. You have to. Everything has to feel kind’ve exactly how you want it and expresses who you are. I’m very specific about everything from my music to how I look to how I want the videos to be to the things I choose to do. Everything. When I did the record for “I Luh You Papi,” I liked that he was that picky. We all have our style of doing things.

  1. Really dope interview Karen, thanks a million for sharing.

  2. Geoff Desantis says:

It’s kinda fun she semi-resurrected the Versace, but the lace-front über hair wig detracts from it.
