Lil Wayne Opens Up About Jail Stint During “Unplugged” Performance
by Karen
This past Thursday Lil Wayne taped his “Unplugged” episode for MTV and ended up shedding light on his time in jail in the process. Since being released from Rikers last November, Weezy has been largely tight lipped about the last year of his life for the most part only speaking about his incarceration in depth to a select number of outlets.
Acknowledging that he is constantly presented with the simple, yet ominious question of “how was jail?” from a countless number of people, Wayne admitted to doing some soul searching on finding the answer. In front of the studio audience, he launched into a cover of the classic Tupac Shakur cut “Hail Mary.” Pac himself did close to a year of incarceration in 1995 after his sexual assault trial before signing with Death Row Records.
He’s aware going forward that people are going to continue to ask, and he said he’ll do more than offer the 2Pac classic — he previously spoke about his experiences for Rolling Stone’s February issue.
“I think I’m going to have to open up more because of this social world we live in now,” he said backstage after the taping. “People are going to think I’m an alien if I don’t say anything about it. You know this world we live in now you can find out anything about everybody.”
During the concert he also treated the hundreds of fans who packed a soundstage at Sony Studios to a track off his highly anticipated disc, “Tha Carter IV,” with a performance of “Nightmares of the Bottom,” where he reflected on his troubles — with a bit of humor.
“If I knew I was going to jail I would have … my attorney,” he rapped.
In regards to his June 21st scheduled Tha Carter IV, only a foreboding preview was given. Expect a “very pleasent surprise when this album when it comes out.” I have no clue what that actually means, but those are his words, not mine. I just hope he did some of his old stuff during the performance – like from The Block Is Hot, Guerilla Warfare or 500 Degreez days.
