Before we dive in, there may be a few of our readers who never had the chance to experience black films of the 80s/90s/2000s. Of course there were a handful of your Paid in Full-like films mixed in with Above the Rim and New Jack City, but there was also a wave of black romantic comedies that riddled our adult lives with memorable scenes, favorite characters and quotables to last us a lifetime (“You are the perfect verse over a tight beat”).

This Friday (Nov. 15), our teenage dreams will finally come true with the release of The Best Man Holiday. After a long fifteen years, we’ll finally get to catch up with Harper Stewart (Taye Diggs) and his sneaky publishing career. We saw how they met, but are Merch and Kandi happily married fifteen years later? And what became of Lance and his new wife Mia?

In celebration of the highly anticipated sequel to the 90s fave (finally!), here are 10 black rom-coms that we feel have left us hanging. –Lauren Gaspard

1. Love Jones (1997)
From the opening scene down to the final moments when Darius Lovehall (Larenz Tate) chased down his sultry lover Nina Mosley (Nia Long), we’ve been dying for a continuation. We know Darius has enough alluring poetry stashed away that can bring us an extended story. Come. On!

2. The Wood (1999)
Granted, this may not be more of a coming-of-age tale overall., in the end, the boys realized that a major part of growing up was learning to remain friends while loving. Slim (Richard T. Jones), Ro (Taye Diggs) and Mike (Omar Epps) all seemed to part ways after the wedding ceremony and we never got a chance to see what was in store for the next chapter of their lives. Predictions? An awesome rom-com.

3. Love & Basketball (2000)
In 2000 it seemed like every girl wanted their lives to end up like Love and Basketball. Monica and Q’s storybook ending was one we’ll never forget, but did their love last? After all, Q was coming off of that crazy knee injury. What if he never returned back to the game? Needless to say, we never received complete closure with this storyline.

4. Boomerang (1992)
This star-studded film gave us a love story on top of a history lesson. With actresses Eartha Kitt and Grace Jones as part of the cast, and a strikingly youthful and beautiful Halle Berry as Eddie Murphy’s love interest, this movie had all the makings of a classic. We’ve gotta be honest, the only way we’d like to see a sequel of this one is if all the living original cast members come back.

5. Brown Sugar (2002)
The Sanaa Lathan/Taye Diggs combo seems to really work when it comes to all of our fave movies. Hip hop-loving NYC friends, Sidney and Dre, grew up to realize all roads led to embracing their love for one another. But, if we recall there was so many other components to this movie that have gone unanswered. What happened Sid and Dre’s significant others? Did Francine (Queen Latifah) and Cav (Mos Def) ever link up? We need answers, people.

6. How Stella Got Her Grove Back (1998)
We pretty much know how things ended between Stella (Angela Bassett) and Winston (Taye Diggs), but being that this is based on a true story from author Terry McMillian, the true ending has the potential to be quite the scandalous sequel.

7. Two Can Play That Game (2001)
We know some of you are aware of the pseudo-sequel Three Can Play That Game (2007) featuring Shanté Smith (Vivica Fox) and others. And if you’ve ever seen it, you can understand that we would also prefer this one to be restricted to original cast members only! If we aren’t picking up where we left off with Shanté and Keith Fenton (Morris Chestnut) while implementing a new 10-day plan, then we are quite alright with leaving this one in the archives.

8. Deliver Us From Eva (2003)
We left Eva Dandridge (Gabrielle Union) and Ray Adams (LL Cool J) riding off into the sunset after a series of unfortunate events. Last we saw, Eva was finally breaking away from her younger sisters as the matriarch of the family to pursue her new career in Chicago. Does this mean the couple set up shop back the Chi? Raising a family while Eva’s out bringing home the money? After all, Ray was an escort turned husband. Just saying.

9. SHEHATEME (2004)
This Spike Lee joint slipped under several radars during the time. Actor Anthony Mackie and Scandal star Kerry Washington teamed up for a rather controversial film. Washington plays Mackie’s former fiancé who comes out as a lesbian but wants to use her former beau’s sperm to conceive. In the end (and after 18 preggo lesbians), the duo end up back into a relationship with the addition of a third female counterpart. This plot could go just about anywhere. Eighteen children, one three-way relationship and a professional career? Where is our popcorn?

10. Coming To America (1988)
It may be safe to say that there will never be another film with such an comedic influence as this one again. Seriously, most of us could probably recite the entire movie with our eyes closed. Putting together a sequel for this would be quite the challenge as there is no way to make a film as comparable or entertaining as the first one. But we would give anything just to see Semmi, Randy Watson, Clarence, Prince Hakeem and his new wife Lisa just one more time.
