Janine and The Mixtape has an addiction. The New Zealand native has become obsessed with popular Mexican restaurant Blockheads, in particular, their $9 taco lunch special with $2 margaritas. “It’s kind’ve the best thing in the world,” she says over the phone.

Mexican eats, lower Manhattan shopping and Brooklyn rooftop hangouts are all a way for the rising singer-songwriter-producer to unwind from her hectic schedule of being an upcoming artist. Her New Zealand roots provided her the time to observe and write with hip hop as the backdrop.

“New Zealand is a very urban music base when it comes to music and hip hop is very popular,” she explains of her home country. “Most of my favorite hip hop has come from America, I grew up listening to it, but the style is fairly different [from New Zealand].”

Since her buzz track “Hold Me” off Dark Mind EP appeared during this season’s Love and Hip Hop Atlanta, the soft-toned vocalist has been on a steady rise – meeting with labels, booking shows and getting contacted by other artists, who are interested in collaborating with her. After catching Janine on our radar, here’s what she had to say about growing up in New Zealand and hoping to one day work with Missy Elliott. – @All3y_B
