Ciara Announces New Business Endeavor – Beauty Marks Entertainment
by Aisha Buchanan
Yesterday, Ciara took to instagram to announce her new company, Beauty Marks Entertainment (BME). BME is where music “intersects with film, fashion, technology & philanthropy.”
Say Hello To BME! Today was a very special day announcing my new company @BeautyMarksEnt where Music intersects w/ Film, Fashion, Tech & Philanthropy! This journey has been amazing & I’ve had the time of my life releasing my music under my own label imprint. #LevelUp pic.twitter.com/7mHGGuSFZJ— Ciara (@ciara) February 8, 2019
The Level Up queen has built her new enterprise on a business model that supports forward-thinking entertainers taking an entrepreneurial approach to their careers. BME also fulfills all the functions of a record label and provides an outlet for Ciara to achieve her many far-ranging ambitions. BME debuted its first major endeavor in June 2018, when Ciara released ‘Level Up,’ which hit 11 on the Billboard US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and peaked at number 59 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
Speaking of record labels, NFL Star and Ciara’s husband, Russell Wilson, recently purchased Ciara’s “masters” from her record labels and gifted them to her, in her name according to sources close to the matter.
Ciara explained in a recent interview at the MAKERS Women’s Conference that she has full control over her music now moving forward.
Ciara detailed with Billboard what the business process has been like this far in her career and how important it was to own not only her past but her future.
I started off signed to Arista records and then shortly after, I was about to put out my first song. The label folds, the executive that signed me went to another label, and I had to re-audition for another label to hope that they would give me a shot to put out my first song that I had already prepared to put out. And then another change happened in that system and I had to switch to another system. Sometimes you don’t know it’s happening but those tough moments build your character.
The idea of ownership is really important to me and that’s what this phase is about. It’s truly about, let’s really build things to where it can last for a really long time and I can really reap the full benefits of my labor. I’ve been in systems and the way the deals are typically structured for us artists, we don’t really get to reap the full financial benefits of our labor. I love what I do. I wake up every day excited to do what I do, even during the toughest times. But at the same time, it’s like, let’s make economic sense of it all as well.
The GRAMMY winning superstar is set to release a new single just in time for Valentine’s Day titled ‘Greatest Love’. She teased the cover on social media alongside the news of her new musical imprint.
2018 was a great year for Ciara but it is evident that the singer and businesss-woman will be making 2019 a year of unapologetic wins.
