Mustard “Pure Water (feat. Migos)” is Zane Lowe’s World Record on Beats 1 on Apple Music. This song follows up his single “Dangerous World (feat. Travis Scott and YG).” Mustard and Quavo had worked together previously, but this was the first time Mustard collaborated with Takeoff and Offset. The producer talks about what to expect in 2019, saying he would be back in the studio with Ella Mai when she’s back from tour. Mustard discusses being nominated for his first Grammy for Ella Mai, and how he discovered her.  He also mentions that he has “nuclear bombs” lined up with 21 Savage, Future, Meek Mill, Tyga, YG, and more

Check out the interview with Mustard below.

Mustard on WR “Pure Water”:

Zane: Wow. This one has so much feel to it. It’s what I love, and you know, “Pure Water,” was it always Migos on this? That you always heard on this beat?

Mustard: Yeah, it was always Migos. At first it was just a song me and Quavo came up with, and then I was like, “No, I gotta get the whole gang on here.” We worked our way to get everybody on there and it was … I knew what it was when I first heard it though.

Zane: It is so immediate. Within three seconds you’ll get it, and now the rest of the world will, too. We’re gonna stream it right now, and set it free, with the blessing of Mustard, featuring Migos. The song is called “Pure Water.” We’re coming back with the artist in a minute. It’s Beats 1 Apple Music.

Zane: Dude, Takeoff goes off on that, man.

Mustard: Yes, sir.

Zane: It’s hard to pick, and it’s a private conversation you normally have amongst friends who are as obsessed with Migos as everybody else is. Which one is one is your favorite? Bro, I’ve been pretty straight. I think Takeoff is the stealth assassin in their group.

Mustard: Takeoff went crazy, but I love Quavo. He set the tone for everybody. How he started was just like … That was it for me.

Zane: What has changed about working with them on “Pure Water” than perhaps in the past? How have they grown in your perspective?

Mustard: This is my first time working with Offset and Takeoff. Me and Quavo got an ongoing relationship ’cause we did the song “Want Her” a long time ago. Now with this song, it was easier. I feel like everybody grown, even myself. With me and Quavo, it was just tag teaming, getting everybody involved, but once it came together, it was like a match made in heaven type thing. You know what I’m saying?

Zane: What are you saying for 2019? What are the facts? What are the priorities? What are we looking forward to?

Mustard: Definitely working on a ton of music myself. Me and Ella constantly working. She’s on tour right now. She’s doing overseas, and then she comes back over here. Grammy’s coming up, so this is my first time ever being nominated.

Zane: Do you know what you’re gonna wear, man? You worked it out?

Mustard: Yeah, I got a cool tie for a suit. I’m already ready. I’m locked and loaded, working out every day. I’m trying to get it in.

Zane: How many joints you got ready to go? Do you have a project lined up? Is it pretty much done?

Mustard: Yeah, we got, we call them, nuclear bombs, ’cause we gonna shake the whole world up. I got records, and I got a lot of them.

Zane: Can you give us a hint of a collaboration or something that you’ve got locked in and ready to go?

Mustard: I got something crazy with Future. I got something crazy with 21. I got something crazy with Meek. Obviously, Ty and YG and my normal people that I work, but I got some other people too that’s just like whoa, I didn’t even think that you would even do that. We definitely going for the gusto this whole year. We wanna do as much as we can to show everybody that this is definitely gonna be a good year for me and my team. I’m actually going into the studio with Lil Jon today, which is a dream of mine. I’m gonna be in the studio with him for the next two days and conjure up something crazy.

Mustard on Ella Mai & What’s Next:

Zane: With the Grammy’s approaching what was it that you heard that we hadn’t heard at that moment in time that you knew we would. That was in Ella.

Mustard: I just knew her voice and her talent would take her a long way. And I knew that, you know I always wanted to do like R&B music, so once I kind of like got to the point where it was like, we worked on the whole plan. There was me, her and my team and we said we’re going to do this and we stuck to the plan and we never moved outside of that of plan.

Mustard: So for me it was more so, like I just knew she had the talent and I knew that once she got, you know went out there that everybody would know and everybody would like her just as much as I did. But it was all about creating that sound and creating the foundation with like her fans and stuff like that. This is what I’ve been seeing this whole time.

Zane: Would you agree do you feel like the idea of melody making, you know, a stronger impression over music like that you make and others that your peers make is definitely, it feels like it’s the right moment right now.

Mustard: Yeah definitely, most definitely and I think with me it was more so like I wanted the challenge. You know what I’m saying. I wanted to do something that people thought I couldn’t, you know what I’m saying? So instead of me coming out with like a rapper or you know a male artist that was going to be, you know, this rapper kid that does ratchet music, I wanted to get the R&B thing, you know, with somebody that I thought would help me do it and it was worth it.

Zane: And then come back and slap us around the head with “Pure Water.”

Mustard: Yeah. Gotta give you some of that righteous stuff. You know I tried the EDM stuff, it was good, it was fun, but I’ve just got to do what people love me for, and I think this is it, and I know this like the back of my hand. So you know I don’t want to abandon what got me here.

Zane: It’s going to be a great year for you if October 2018 is anything to go by, man. Congratulations on the announcement bro. I know that you’ve got nuptials on the horizon and that you know life just must feel very complete for you right now. Between being where you’re at in your career but also knowing your personal life is matching up with that.

Mustard: Yes sir, nothing’s perfect but I almost feel like I’m in a perfect box right now.
