Our latest Civil Selects R&B Edition rattles a downbeat sentiment as July comes to a close. Check out these fresh new artists from Atlanta, DMV, Seattle & Toronto round out our final R&B selections. Take a listen and let us know what you think. All of our artists this month can also be found on our official Civil Selects: July playlist on Apple Music, add it here or stream below.
Artist: Nai Br.XX
Track: Hi4
Hot Take: A rising star out of Atlanta that blends her soft yet powerful voice (reminiscent of Amel Larrieux) with unique R&B & Alternative grooves. ‘Hi4’ is a great entry into that Contemporary R&B lane and an awesome intro to the artist.
Artist: Robert Deal
Track: One Night Stand
Hot Take: The DMV native melodically laments over a simple guitar riff, drum and kick acoustic track on ‘One Night Stand’, a song about wanting to be more in a situation that might not yield much else. This is the type of track you would find in the season finale of Insecure.
Artist: ParisAlexa
Track: Ballin
Hot Take: The Seattle singer/songwriter/producer forges forward crafting her own sound in R&B. ‘Ballin’ sees the super talented 19-year old float over a progressive beat about personal growth and achievement from her current status.
Artist: Amaal Nuux
Track: Scream
Hot Take: Crawling over a sparse downbeat, Amaal Nuxx proclaims her place on a track where she’s inviting her lover to scream her name “like a protest”. The Somali-Canadian singer paints a picture of declaring steadfastness in a relationship as an act of defiance, “everywhere but here …is complicated”.
