We’re in the middle of summer taking a look at four new Civil Selects rappers from Chicago, Minneapolis and Dublin with fresh sounds and approaches to their crafts. Listen below and tell us what you think. All of our artists this month can also be found on our official Civil Selects: July playlist on Apple Music, add it here or stream below.

Artist: Queen Key

Track: Spenda Night (ft. Tink)

Hot Take: The 21-year old rapper takes a humorous approach to her lyricism which normally involves loving, leaving and the autonomy of women. Queen is joined by fellow Chicago scion Tink on a ‘Spenda Night’ that is reminiscent of women-first foremothers Trina and Lil’ Kim.

Artist: Cada Bug

Track: 1 Take

Hot Take: The Chicago native, Atlanta resident Cada Bug takes a play on the idea that it takes two with his latest with his forthcoming project ‘708’. In the video for the song Cada takes to Chicago shooting in front of Kanye West’s childhood home.

Artist: Jafaris

Track: Found My Feet

Hot Take: Based in Dublin, this rising artist is living his best life. With majority live instrumentation and a rapid-fire flow throughout, Jafaris proclaims “I fly way too much, my feet don’t touch the ground.” Check out the video to the new single here.

Artist: Love At First Sound

Track: Everything

Hot Take: The Minneapolis native gets personal about overcoming weathering the storms of depression and adversity. Written, produced and performed by the rapper, his staccato delivery sounds as if reciting poetry over the track with a simple piano line in the background.
