Akon is looking to expand his resume. The R&B-rooted Senegalese artist is launching his own cryptocurrency called Akoin that will be available for sale in two weeks.

The venture will reportedly propel Akon’s Lighting Africa initiative, which aims to improve the country’s living conditions through the use of renewable energy. Akon spoke about his cryptocurrency during a panel at Cannes Lions 2018. Akon let it be known he was in talks with different hyperledger blockchain development services to get all the correct systems developed for his new cryptocurrency.

“I think that blockchain and crypto could be the savior for Africa in many ways because it brings the power back to the people and brings the security back into the currency system and also allows the people to utilize it in ways where they can advance themselves and not allow government to do those things that are keeping them down,” he explained during a panel. However, it is important to remember with every type of currency in the world, there are going to be issued with taxes, and this will be no different. Akon creating his own cryptocurrency, although being a grand fete, will have its personal set issues that may come with it, particularly when it comes to taxes and dealing with the IRS. Yes, even cryptocurrencies have to deal with taxes, and there are a lot of changing regulations put in place in order to keep track of the virtual currencies such as Bitcoins, and other forms of blockchain currencies, etc. Akon’s new Akoin will be just another that will have to follow government made regulations. It seems that Akon knows what he’s doing though!

Way to go Akon. Congratulations!
