After much chagrin about the rollout for Spotify‘s new “hate content and hateful conduct” policy could have been handled better, the streaming provider’s CEO conceded Wednesday.

“The whole goal with this was to make sure that we didn’t have hate speech,” Daniel Ek said during a Code Conference Q&A session, according to Variety. “It was never about punishing one individual artist or even naming one individual artist.” The new policy, announced earlier this month, ultimately resulted in the removal of XXXTentacion and R. Kelly from Spotify playlists. X’s music was ultimately reinstated for playlist placement, while Kelly’s was not. “We rolled this out wrong and could have done a much better job,” Ek said.

Early last month, Spotify announced a new policy against “Hate Content & Harmful Conduct,” under which the music streaming service stopped including artists guilty of misconduct in their playlists and other editorial promotions.

XXXTentacion, who was charged for physically abusing a pregnant woman, and R. Kelly, who has been accused of raping multiple women and minors, were the affected artists initially announced.

According to Bloomberg, the music streaming service told music executives that they planned to restore XXX’s content back to playlists, which came after internal rifts and a public outrage in the process.

Soon, Spotify Chief Executive Officer Daniel Ek and head of artist relations Troy Carter received calls from representatives of several acts – including Kendrick Lamar who expressed frustration.

The “DAMN.” MC reportedly threatened to pull his music, along with those other unnamed executives, if the company maintained its current policy. Top Dawg Entertainment President, Punch also commented on the situation saying, “Whoa. Are they censoring the music? That’s dangerous.”
