Janelle Monáe’s presence in modern R & B has been sorely missed. For starters, she isn’t your cookie-cutter definition of a “singer.” She’s a multi-talented vocalist that brilliantly mixes and amalgamates genres to great effect. The world hasnt’ received an album from her since 2013’s Electric Lady, but it looks like that is about to change. A mysterious trailer, that’s currently playing in select theaters – along with an accompanying “film narrative” that she calls an “emotion picture”-before screenings of Black Panther, announces the upcoming project as Dirty Computers which doesn’t currently have a release date. If you haven’t had the chance to check out the film yet, Monae also released a first online teaser for the project.

Dissecting the 33-second teaser is nearly impossible due to its mind-boggling nature. Starring Monáe, actress Tessa Thompson, and other notable faces, the clip switches quickly between a number of scenes. It looks to be futuristic in nature, and the overarching narration hints at themes of Afrofuturism. We will have to wait until further information releases before we get the full picture, but one thing’s for certain – the project looks to be the most ambitious thing she’s ever done.
