Kendrick Lamar and Big Sean Go Platinum After RIAA Changes Gold and Platinum Rules

The Recording Industry Association of America has incorporated new streaming rules and regulations.
Today (February 1), the RIAA sent out a press released which stated the new certification process for their Gold & Platinum Program.
RIAA will now include on-demand audio and video streams and a track sale equivalent in Gold & Platinum (G&P’s) Album Award. This means that the program’s iconic benchmarks will now include their typical 500,000 as Gold, 1,000,000 Platinum, and 2,000,000 plus more as Multi-Platinum structure for sales and streams for both single and album certifications.
In simpler terms, RIAA now recognizes 1,500 audio and/or video song streams as 10 equivalent track sales, which in turn counts for one equivalent album sale. So every 1,500 streams counts as one album sale.
And as of today, some notable artists have received updated certifications, which include Platinum for Big Sean’s Dark Sky Paradise and Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly. While The Weeknd’s Beauty Behind The Madness goes 2x Multi-Platinum and Wale’s Ambition goes gold.
Cary Sherman, Chairman and CEO of RIAA says, “We know that music listening – for both for albums and songs – is skyrocketing, yet that trend has not been reflected in our album certifications. Modernizing our Album Award to include music streaming is the next logical step in the continued evolution of Gold & Platinum Awards, and doing so enables RIAA to fully reward the success of artists’ albums today.”
