Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, F. Gary Gray and everyone else who was a part of the Straight Outta Compton biopic deserve a hefty round of applause. Not only did they take the story of one of hip-hop’s most prolific groups in history, N.W.A., to the big screen, they managed to rake in $56.1 million in the opening weekend, solidifying the number 1 spot!

In addition to those remarkable accolades, Straight Outta Compton had the best opening weekend in the history of biopicsRay ($20 million in 2004), Notorious ($20 million in 2009) and Walk the Line ($22 million in 2005). There’s been nothing but positive feedback when it comes to the movie and despite it taking so long to come to fruition, it was well worth the wait.

To add to the list of successes, Dr. Dre’s brand new album Compton: The Soundtrack, which was inspired by the movie, debuted at number 2 on the charts, falling just 50,000 copies behind Luke Bryan. Nonetheless, Dre raked in 300,904 copies (with streams included) according to HDD, making for an impressive release.

Congratulations once again to the entire Straight Outta Compton team for the success, and to Dre for his new album. The west coast is winning!
