As a white woman writer in hip-hop, it’s easy for me to recognize the black women in hip-hop, and their contributions to pop culture for years, with majority not receiving the proper credit. They have also been painted by the media in a more aggressive, provoking, and overly opinionated manner while speaking out, which has become a complete misrepresentation and distraction from the root issue. As someone who is for the empowerment of women, Taylor should understand the damage in her words as a white woman, being that she is consistently glorified by the major media outlets. Not only is she bringing attack onto Nicki as a woman, but even more so as a black woman.

T-Swift has a history for benefitting off of black culture and stereotypes for her own gain. This point was proven alone when she decided to feature black women twerking in her “Shake It Off” video, but incorporated a white ballerina. If she is serious about all women being empowered, where were any tweets from her a week ago when Sandra Bland’s jail cell death didn’t get nearly the same amount of coverage as Dylann Roof’s mass murders? Why can’t she continue to use her Twitter to call out the media outlets that glorify her, since she “loves & supports” Nicki so much?

As a white woman myself, I can honestly, and easily see, that Nicki’s tweets were to bring awareness, not to take shots. Taylor’s time to be glorified and picked up off the ground as the victim has come and gone. It’s time that the black women who give white women in pop their misappropriation ideas in videos get some of the credit that they deserve. After all, they are the ones doing it right. With that being said, have a seat, sit back, and take notes, Ms. Swift.

  1. It is very unfortunate that Taylor swift was viewing the situation from a one sided perspective whereas all Nicki was doing was nothing but bringing out awareness. If someone has been breaking records after records and is not being given enough credit for it, I honestly think Taylor Swift should’ve had atleast some decency to be somewhat understanding rather than viewing things in a one sided perspective. Instead of people showing respect to the complexity of the truth, Nicki standing up for herself has made her look like the bad guy. Amazing article Lindsey India!!!
