Current and former interns in the entertainment industry are buzzing right now.

Today, Forbes reported Warner Music Group is the latest entertainment-related company that has settled with former interns in regards to pay owed. The firm has agreed to pay out $4.2 million, which is set to be shared between all those that sued the company, as well as their lawyers. So, what happened?

Basically, hundreds of people who interned for the company over a period of several years (starting in 2007) banded together to sue the company, which is one of the three major record labels, claiming they had either been underpaid or were never compensated monetarily for their work. Warner’s music division, like the rest of the music industry, is trying to cut costs wherever possible, and interns were a valuable money-saver.

Is it so bad that interns don’t get paid? The debate is tough for this specific topic, and because of these lawsuits, we can expect to see companies cracking down on internship programs and students not getting the opportunities they deserve.
