Universal Music considers “care packages” containing mixtapes gifted to those incarcerated as a crime and are moving to have these tapes banned from sale. In a complaint filed in a California federal court, Universal Music is launching a copyright lawsuit against a group of companies including Centric Group and Keefe Group.

Universal is accusing such groups of selling mixtapes without the permission from Universal artists. Artists include Tupac, Eminem, LL Cool J, Nas, Mary J. Blige and James Brown. The particular mixtapes in question compile songs from different artists and are sometimes mixed on a single CD.

The lawsuit claims that “such so-called ‘mixtapes,’ unless authorized by the copyright owner or owner of corresponding state law rights, are nothing more than collections of infringing, piratical compilations of copyrighted or otherwise legally protected sound recordings and copyrighted musical composition.”

Universal is seeking up to a maximum of $150,000 in damages for each work infringed as well as restitution of unlawful proceeds, punitive damages and more.
