Kanye West’s 808s & Heartbreak descended upon a world that apparently wasn’t ready for it. Six years later, Rolling Stone revisits the auto-tune full album to herald it as one of Ye’s most successful projects yet.

“Its core aesthetic was like nothing in hip-hop: freshly butchered feelings enumerated in detail, but masked by digital processing; beds of spare synths used to balance a mix of singing and rapping,” the entry reads. “However, over time it served as a new template for up-and-comers in hip-hop and R&B.”

Yeezus joins Mary J. Blige’s What’s The 411, Michael Jackson’s Thriller and plenty more in the magazine’s 40 Most Groundbreaking Albums Of All Time list. Head to Rolling Stone to view the full list.
