Miles Davis

On the same street where the great jazz musician Miles Davis crafted beautiful songs a sign now hangs to always remember the icon. In New York City’s Upper West Side, a street sign titled “Miles Davis Way” hangs proudly on 77th Street between Riverside and West End. The legendary jazz trumpeter lived in apartment building 312 West 77th street for nearly 25 years.

Yesterday (May 26), in celebration of the late musicians 88th birthday, hundreds came out to watch the street name unveiled. The campaign was led by Shirley Zafirau, a former neighbor of Davis who still resides on the block. According to Zafirau, the musician often hung out on the stoop and greeted those who passed by, even leading jam sessions.

“He interacted with the community on the street,” Zafirau tells the New York Times. “He really liked being there.”

Many share a deep love of Davis’ work, with the best music documentaries of all time paying homage to what he brought to the medium, and constant lauding sweeping across the internet landscape when it comes to the man. He was a devoted soul when it came to his craft, and the way that music resonated with so many has made him a proud symbol of the city.

Due to Zafirau’s efforts, outgoing New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg signed a bill renaming the street into law last December.

“It’s a great honor for my uncle,” Vince Wilburn Jr., a nephew of Davis. “The family is very excited about it.”
