Madonna caused a social media storm with her use of the N-word in a hashtag on an Instagram post.

The use of the controversial word came as she shared a photo of her son Rocco Ritchie boxing. The post on the photo friendly social network was met with backlash from the pop star’s followers.

Madonna removed the original photo which featured the caption “No one messes with Dirty Soap! Mama said knock you out! #disn—a” and reposted the picture with “Ok let me start this again. #get off my dick haters!” Ultimately the singer removed the picture all together.

In a statement to CNN the Material Girl says “it was not meant as a racial slur,” before releasing a full apology on Instagram, which you can check out after the jump.

In a statement on Instagram, Madonna asked for forgiveness: “I am sorry if I offended anyone with my use of the N word on Instagram. It was not meant as a racial slur…I am not a racist. There’s no way to defend the use of the word. It was all about intention. It was used as a term of endearment toward my son who is white. I appreciate that it’s a provocative word and I apologize if it gave people the wrong impression. Forgive me.”

She added: “MY job is to inspire and bring people together . My message has always been about tolerance and non judgement. The last thing I want to do is bring chaos or cause separation in anyway. #revolutionoflove”

Besides Rocco, she has three other children, including Lourdes, David and Mercy. Mercy and David are black, adopted from the African nation of Malawi. Rocco is Madonna’s son with ex, director Guy Ritchie.

This is the second time this year that Madonna has offended people on Instagram. Earlier this month, she posted a photo of Rocco and his two young friends holding up bottles of liquor; she defended the post as a joke.

“No one was drinking we were just having fun! Calm down and get a sense of humor! Don’t start the year off with judgment!” she responded on Instagram.
