President Obama Announces $100 Million HIV Cure Initiative

Following the 25th annual World Aids Day, President Obama has announced a new HIV cure initiative at the National Institutes of Health in which his administration will be redirecting $100 million to find a new generation of therapies.
“The United States should be at the forefront of new discoveries into how to put HIV into long-term remission without requiring lifelong therapies, or better yet, eliminate it completely,” Obama said.
Obama also revealed that over the next three years the United States will contribute $5 billion to The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria if other countries do their part and contribute twice as much. The Global Fund is trying to raise $15 billion to cover its programs from 2014 to 2016.The fund already supports HIV therapy for more than 5 million people and treatments for tuberculosis and malaria. –Shanae Hatchett
