Questlove joined New York’s city officials in launching the new Made In NY Media Center yesterday (Oct. 2). The Roots’ musician rocked a fancy headset alongside one of the center’s founders to cut the ribbon without ever moving a muscle.

The Made In NY Media Center was created to help propel the city’s take on media into the future. “The way media is produced and is consumed is changing dramatically,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg said. “While tech is expanding the very horizon of possibility for media, New York’s media strength is also fueling the city’s incredible tech growth.”

According to the Metro, the new media center–located in a 104-year-old coffee factory in the DUMBO section of Brooklyn–will “operate as the first government sponsored incubator focusing on digital media.”

Questlove is the center’s first artist-in-residence and is excited for the opportunities the center will create. “This will be a vibrant space that will embrace forward-thinking, like-minded artists,” he said.

The center will host classes and memberships for the public as well as provide a café, community space, workspace for film, television, video, gaming, technology and advertising professionals. It will also feature an art gallery and screening room.

The center officially opens Oct. 15. – Alley Olivier
