Wyclef Continues To Face Financial Questions With Foundation

It is almost unreal that the earthquake which crippled Haiti to its very core occured almost a year ago to the day. Since then, the photos and stories have come to define a country which is attempting to bring itself from undernearth the rubble, both figuratively and literally. However, for almost the same amount of time, Wyclef has been in the crossfire of controversy after controversy. His desire to attain political office in the country was shut down and the reports of financial infidelities continue to define his Yele foundation.

Tax returns supposedly tell the entire story with the staff members earning a combined $336,000 while only approximately $518,000 on programs in Haiti. There are also allegations that an alleged mistress received a $42,000 raise in 2008, thus making her annual salary close to $150,000.

Yele paid out hundreds of thousands of dollars to businesses controlled by the former Fugees rapper and his partners, which Jean acknowledged in a tearful response last year.

The group received a $14 million windfall in donations in the wake of the last year’s devastating earthquake, but previously Yele was repeatedly in the hole. The charity’s deficit creeped up to nearly $600,000 last year, the tax returns show.

Regardless of whatever is true or isn’t true, let’s just all hope those who really deserve the attention and care – the people of Haiti – actually receive this assistance.
