With Hennessy V.S. on pour, industry folk and celebrities gathered at New York’s Pillar 38 to celebrate T.I. and his AKOO Clothing Brand’s launch of Book of Kings Vol. 1. The inaugural coffee table book features artist Sue Tsai, photographer Jonathan Mannion, our very own Karen Civil and plenty other leading tastemakers.

Book of Kings Vol. 1 aims to put all of hip-pop’s leading innovators and leaders in one space detailing their story and capturing them in their element through photos. Editorial director Bonsu Thompson was responsible in crafting the profiles to accompany photographer Mark Atkinson’s photos.

“The thought process was to salute swag and the individuals most responsible for displaying it,” T.I. said. “Displaying it in a way that only they could. Not doing what everyone else is doing and what the trends say is cool. I’m talking about who has a very unique individualize contribution.”

Making the cut to be included in the next Book of Kings volume won’t be easy. Published bi-annually, Tip says it takes a king to make the Book of Kings.“[To make the Book of Kings they must] presents themselves as a king and handle themselves accordingly. Daring to be different when it’s not agreed upon by the masses, finding a way to feed everybody, protect everybody and not compromise your integrity in the process, believing more in yourself than you do in the haters, finding ways to invest your time in your progression and walk as a display of your evolution. It’s what you say without saying, do without doing, its what’s in you more so than what’s on you.”

Also on display at the event were some hand-picked AKOO pieces from the “Search and Rescue” holiday collection, which takes inspiration from nature and the woods. The King himself has just one thing to say to those still on the fence about rocking AKOO. “That’s your got damn fault, you need to get yourself together man. I can’t guarantee you that she’ll undress you if you have on AKOO, but I can tell you that your chances are a helluva lot better.” –Alley Olivier
