In a world where every major television channel has a revolving door of singing competitions that quickly lose their popularity, ABC’s new singing competition series Rising Star may have some staying power with its socially-driven voting construct. Last night (June 22), viewers downloaded the Rising Star app, which allows them to vote on the night’s performances in real time.

With a simple tap, those at home and in the audience pretty much have complete control over if someone makes it to the next round or not. Plus, they don’t have to wait until the next day or week to find out results. They can watch the votes roll in during the highs and lows of a performance.

The goal is for contestants to impress America in a minute and a half enough to get 70 percent of the votes. If they’re lucky, a wall is raised and the performer is welcomed by a live audience and three judges – Brad Paisley, Kesha and Ludacris.
