Rihanna-Doobie-Karen-CivilRihanna’s doobie wrap has remained the talk of the week since the 2013 American Music Awards aired Sunday night (November 24). The first-ever IDOL winner accepted the award with her tresses protected by embellished pins.

The rule-breaker turned quite a few heads as she graced the red carpet and now the much talked about do is being given some context courtesy of RiRi’s stylist Ursula Stephen.

“It was actually Rihanna’s idea. She had her mind made up! Honestly, I was a little hesitant but I knew she could pull it off, so I was all for it,” Ursula said in an interview with Elle. “I knew it would get a reaction but I wasn’t sure if it would be positive or negative. A doobie on the red carpet has never been done before so I knew it could have gone either way.”

For some, Rihanna’s wrap was too understated for an artist receiving an award but according to Ursula it was all about nodding to the fashion of the 30’s.

“Everyone has an opinion. However, the doobie has been worn to Bergdorf Goodman. They just haven’t been paying attention. And it’s been around since the ’30s. Part of my job is to know eras, trends and fashion, and to keep looks alive by adding a modern twist,” Ursula explained.
