Pharrell’s headgear has found him in some hot water. The usually “Happy” crooner has sparked some outrage for his latest cover where he trades in his now trademark Vivienne Westwood buffalo hat for a traditional Native American headdress. The star has already issued an apology through his camp.

“I respect and honor every kind of race, background and culture. I am genuinely sorry,” a rep issued in a statement to the Daily News.

The singer joins the recent list of stars to receive backlash after adorning something indicative of another race or culture. Following Julianna Hough’s Halloween blackface and most recently Macklemore’s Jewish witch nose, Pharrell’s Native American head gear ignited a #NotHappy trending topic on Twitter.

“Pharell…why?! #NotHappy with @ELLEmagazine for the appropriation of this headdress,” one user wrote.

ELLE UK is also receiving some backlash for printing the offensive cover and is seemingly attempting to lessen their hand in all of this. Originally assuming blame for the cover with a post on their website June 3 that read:  “We persuaded ELLE Style Award winner Pharrell to trade his Vivienne Westwood mountie hat for a native American feather headdress in his best ever shoot.”

Now, the Hearst-owned glossy has changed their statement to spread the blame equally. “We persuaded ELLE Style Award Winner Pharrell to collaborate with us on his best ever shoot.”
