Way back in 1999, I was introduced to the greatness of “chopped and screwed” music by a friend who had moved to my neighborhood from Houston. At first, I thought the batteries were draining in his CD player because that’s what normally happened with mine before it shut down completely. To make a long story much, much shorter, he informed me that’s how the music sounded. Lil Flip (yes, Lil Flip) had some hot C&S freestyles that I remember and, to this day, arguably my favorite R&B song to receive the treatment is R. Kelly’s “Feelin’ On Yo Booty.”

What’s this have to do with anything? One of my favorite projects this year has been chopped and screwed, Dom Kennedy’s The Original Dom Kennedy. Off top, the one track I cannot wait to hear with its new features is the outro “When You See Love.” Next time you get real inebriated, throw this on and zone out. It’s perfect for the occasion. I wouldn’t exactly recommend codeine, but you’re going to do what you’re going to do anyway. Just download the tape. And make sure you have a designated driver.
