MIA-versus-versace-karen-civilM.I.A.’s much-anticipated Versace collection is being released on October 16, but the first two images of the vibrant collection are here.

The collab, housed under Versace’s more affordable Versus umbrella, features a capsule of 19 pieces for both men and women. The colorful threads stay true to the Versace aesthetic but are inspired by knockoffs of Versace prints in London street markets. It’s surprising how familiar many of these prints are to iconic Versace symbols, such as the Medusa head and Greek style, plenty of which we see in streetwear today.

“When I was contacted by Versace, it seemed a great idea to invert the circle,” the Matangi singer told WWD when revealing the inspiration behind the collection. Versace’s designs have always been copied, now it’s Versace that copies the copies, so those that copy must copy the copies. So this will continue.”

Wondering how Dontella Versace feels about the counterfeit Versace pieces and the new Versus pieces? She tells WWD,  “I adore the energy of the street, so when M.I.A. proposed to expose the issue of counterfeit Versace pieces by creating a collaboration inspired by these items, I thought it was an incredible idea.” –Shanae Hatchett
