Last Night (Nov. 2) Scandal‘s Kerry Washington took a break from her serious role and provided some humor as the host of NBC’s Saturday Night Live.

Washington’s appearance on the comedy mainstay comes coincidentally after criticism of the show for it’s lack of African-American cast members. Not wasting any time making light of the issue, Saturday Night Live opened with a sketch in which television’s Olivia Pope took the place of the nation’s real life first lady, Michelle Obama.

Kerry was joined on stage by Jay Pharaoh, who took the position of President Barack Obama, who joked about not seeing his wife in a while, a creative and hilarious spin on the show not having a back female to play the counterpart.

Continuing to laugh at their pain, SNL plays a voiceover during the sketch that stated:

The producers at Saturday Night Live would like to apologize to Kerry Washington for the number of black women she will be asked to play. We make these requests because Ms. Washington is an actress of considerable range and talent – and also because SNL does not have currently have a black woman on the cast. Mostly the latter. We agree this is not an ideal situation and look forward to rectifying it in the near future, unless, of course, we fall in love with another white guy first.

After that initial laugh, Washington went on to play in other various sketches such as a game show host, the Uganda Ms. Universe candidate, a angry girlfriend in a hilarious music video spoof and her opening monologue teasing her Scandal role. Check out some of the sketches after the jump.
