The news and anticipation surrounding this year’s Grammy for best rap album is continuing to raise as we draw nearer to Sunday. In an interesting piece of information the Associated Press reveals that Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, the stiff competition for Kendrick Lamar‘s album, almost didn’t make the cut in the Grammy’s rap categories.

A source within the Recording Academy revealed to the AP that during the Grammy committee meeting members of the rap committee felt the “Thrift Shop” tandem should be omitted from rap awards due to mainstream radio and pop success. The questioning of The Heist and it’s creators led to a general committee meeting in which brought in committee members from other genres to see where the album would fit.

“Because of the controversy with them as a rap group it became something the entire Grammy committee discussed,” the source stated before including that the group belonged in rap as a product of a landslide vote.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are up for the best rap album, song and performance along with four other nominations on the evening. The results of these oft debated hip hop nominations comes this Sunday.
