Cyphers Separate The Fashion Rappers From The Real Deal

Rap goes through a cycle of constant evolution. There are details laced in every rapper’s rhyme no matter the year they break into the industry that are ingrained into the genre that simply isn’t going anywhere. Rapping about clothes, money and cars or telling stories of the sociopolitical issues the block faces each day – the rap name changes but in essence the topic remains the same.

Rappers cashing in on a quick hit don’t look to dig deep in the trenches of hip-hop in effort to create a lasting impression. Within those trenches lie supreme levels of lyrical prowess that don’t even require a beat to claim the attention of a crowd bopping to the words being spit. My favorite scene of Eminem’s 8 Mile is when he enters the freestyle circle and dazzles the onlookers with jabs that don’t require a balled fist.

That timeless visual of a freestyle or cypher taking place mid-day, men and women huddled together listening for the next best punch line or level of adaptability a rapper possess is true talent. Talent that this technologically driven age has watered down. Thanks to Em’s Shady Cxvpher, an appreciation for the art was brought back to the forefront as he alongside Yelawolf and Slaughterhouse took turns boxing with nothing but verses.

That’s true rap ability.
