Last year, TV watchers feasted on BET’s annual Hip Hop Awards, and while the cyphers were fan-favorite highlights, veteran female rapper MC Lyte was the honorable recipient of the I AM Hip Hop Award. Her legendary contributions to the game include seven studio albums (she was the first black female rapper to release a solo album), four compilation discs and a slew of inspirational humanitarian acts, mainly the creation of her Hip Hop Sisters Foundation.

With such an accomplished résumé, MC Lyte’s peers and mentees hit the HHA green carpet (word to Sprite) to react to the Michigan-born lyricist’s award.

“I have so much respect for her as a woman and as a female hip-hop artist,” rapper Lola Monroe said.

Self-described hair weaver killer 2 Chainz also chimed in about his thoughts on MC Lyte’s legacy. “She really stands for woman power, she’s got longevity. You know, she’s a career hip-hop fixture. One of the first people I started hearing–double salute to MC Lyte.”
