Being-Mary-Jane-Karen-CivilEpisode three moved a lot slower compared to the last two weeks. The opening scene, as usual, did not disappoint but as for the remaining hour, it didn’t really pick back up. The word for episode three was an addiction. Learning more about Patrick’s (Richard Brooks) own struggles with cocaine addiction, celebrating two years of sobriety, and pegging Mary Jane (Gabrielle Union) as an addict brought another side to the affair plot.

Catching his baby sister with her married boyfriend and throwing some good-natured shade led to Patrick’s effortless assessment of his baby sister. “You’re an addict.” Affairs are like standard addictions – there is something that a person is filling in us. There is that perpetual need to quit. Insatiable appetites for the passion only they can reward. Then there are the insurmountable lies that you’ve lost count of – weaving a web even the master spider has its legs tangled up in. An affair is synonymous with cocaine or any other hard drug. With this being said, getting help with cocaine addiction is a way of finally get your life and health back on track, especially as doing drugs has no health benefits.

Mary Jane shoots up Andre (Omari Hardwick) then hands him back his ring because what they’re doing and how he proposed just isn’t right. She’ll defend their relationship, in her heart she believes he loves her and she loves him, so that makes it ok for them to continue regardless if what they’re doing doesn’t uphold her moral values.

The focus is shifted from Mary Jane to big brother Patrick was a nice change to get some more background on his character. Recovering from cocaine addiction, it appears that the stress of trying to get on his own two feet once again has driven him back to the demon his family celebrated him defeating.

My oh my how the Huxtables have fallen, things truly are not what they seem.
