Santigold released a surprise 10-track mixtape today, July 28, called I Don’t Want: The Gold Fire Sessions. However, she did give fans a heads up yesterday about dropping the mixtape.

According to Billboard, The artist said that her mixtape was dance-hall inspired and that during her childhood, she listened to the Jamaican music tradition, which influenced her recordings with Mixpak’s Dre Skull.

In an interview with Pitchfork, Santigold opened up about the new mixtape and why it was created.

“The whole point was: These are the issues on my mind right now. Just throw it down. Don’t be too precious about the lyrics. That’s why I called it The Gold Fire Sessions, because it’s a collection of songs from the moment.”

The artist also adds that there are a lot of the issues going on in politics, which she cares about a lot. As a result, her “summer reggae record” is focused on social commentary.
