Northern California is well known for it’s pioneers in hip-hop like E-40, Mac Dre, and Too $hort and most recently, Kehlani and G-Eazy.
However, we live in an era in which rap and hip-hop music is continuously expanding and evolving. In fact, there’s a new wave of North Cal newcomers who are captivating the music scene and quickly becoming household names. Most of these artists have received co-signs from YG, Kendrick Lamar, and Drake.
The KarenCivil.com team is giving you a closer look at these fresh faces who are hailing from Sacramento, Vallejo, and Oakland, California.

Saweetie received some well deserved attention with her breaking through single “ICY GRL”. Shortly after making a statement, she dropped her EP, High Maintenance and signed with Warner Bros. Records.
Hailing from Oak Park, Sacramento, Mozzy received a shout out from Kendrick Lamar during his 2017 Grammy’s speech. Since then, the North Cal native dropped his EP, Spiritual Conversations and teamed up with TDE and K. Dot for The Black Panther: The Album.
SOB x RBE
SOB x RBE consists of Yhung TO, DaBoii, Slimmy B, and Lul G. The group originated in Vallejo, California and has been on tour with Sage the Gemini. Earlier this year, the group earned their spot on The Black Panther: The Album.
Nef the Pharaoh
Nef the Pharaoh, another rapper from Vallejo, California is most recognized from collaborating with E-40. His song “Big Tymin‘” became a regional hit. Since, Nef has signed with Sick Wid It Records.
P-Lo is a producer and rapper from the Bay Area. He is a founding member of the HBK Gang, which includes the likes of Kehlani, Iamsu!, and Sage the Gemini. P-Lo gained recognition after his 2017 hit “Put Me On Something” with E-40 and most recently, “Feel Good” featuring G-Eazy.
Kamaiyah reps Oakland, California. Her breakthrough single “How Does It Feel,” put her on the map. Since then, she’s dropped her mixtape A Good Night In The Ghetto and her debut album, Don’t Ever Get It Twisted. Not mention, she’s received co-signs from YG, ScHoolboy Q and Drake.
