The Tribeca Film Festival is known for its ability to boost highly acclaimed documentaries. This year, the story of  Trayvon Martin’s unfortunate death was previewed at the event. Guests were able to see the first episode of  Rest in Power: A Trayvon Martin Story. The six-part docuseries details news clips, interviews, family photos and 911 calls to tell Trayvon’s story and the shooting – via Revolt TV.

Trayvon’s parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin spoke at a post-screening Q&A with MSNBC’s Joy Reid along with executive producers Jenner Furst, Julia Willoughby, Chachi Senior, and Michael Gasparro. Jay-Z was also a vessel to the production team but did not attend the screening.

Fulton told Joy that reliving the incident has been “very difficult, but it’s a tragedy worth telling.” According to Revolt, Trayvon’s parents are aiming to raise more awareness not only for their son, but for “other people impacted by a racially unjust system.” Fulton affirms that Trayvon is the face of many black men whose cases are overlooked.

When asked about gun control Tracy says, “the Parkland incident hit the heart of America. Trayvon Martin wasn’t the heart of America; Trayvon Martin is categorized as the ghetto. And so when this took action outside the ghetto, now America is awake and everybody wants to do something about it. We’ve been trying to get America to do something for years.”

The documentary has not been released to the public. You can preview the official trailer here:
