SZA on her groundbreaking debut album, Ctrl:
“I didn’t even fuck with my own album, so I was so confused and almost, like, angry that everyone fucked with it so much. It meant everything I felt about myself was wrong. And it was just like, If that’s not the truth, then what is the truth?”

On feedback from Donald Glover:
“I think when ‘Love Galore’ went platinum, Donald [Glover] texted me like, ‘Do you still think it sucks?’ And I was like, ‘I dunno.’”

On her recent Grammy losses, after being the most-nominated woman:
“I’m not as mad as I thought I would be. I didn’t have any expectations, actually. That’s why I wasn’t super upset… Perhaps folks place too much importance on the entire situation in general, and place too much importance on the institution.”

On a rumored new album with Mark Ronson and Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker:
“Shit, if I could sit down and make one… No, no actually, 2018 just started. Definitely. Actually, I could do that shit in six months.”

On being the only woman signed to TDE, alongside Kendrick Lamar and ScHoolboy Q:
“[I’ve] never even had this kind of dynamic before, like, it’s fucking crazy. And it can drive you crazy if you don’t just understand how to utilize it.”

From Issa Rae, creator and star of Insecure:
“Up until the release of Ctrl, SZA was more of a sound and a vibe to me. But with Ctrl, I finally recognized her as a whole person that I related to and loved.” — Issa Rae
