Rooted in black culture and a need for equality, Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. album is arguably the best of 2017.

As if the professional accolades and BET Awards celebrating his authenticity didn’t speak loud enough for themselves, he recently took part in an in-depth conversation that brought his aligning theme full circle. In an interview with VICE’s i-D, the Compton king discusses his passion within politics and the driving force behind his conscious collective.

After defining the difference between the widely missed Obama and public enemy Trump, he went on to discuss his lyricism and artist style. “I can sometimes cut the whole world off to write a verse that is perfect to me,” Lamar said. “I could be in the studio all day and turn the phone off and completely zone out, because I feel like this was what I was chosen to do. And I can’t let anyone get in between that.”
