LL Cool J Named First Solo Rap Honoree of the Kennedy Center

Legends like LL Cool J never stop achieving. The New York hip-hop icon has become the first solo rapper to achieve the Kennedy Center’s presidential honor.
The New York Times reports 40th annual Honors ceremony will occur on Sunday, December 3 and lines up other icons in music like Gloria Estefan, Lionel Richie, Normal Lear and famed dancer-choreographer Carmen de Lavallade.
In a statement, LL Cool J shared on his achievement, “to be able to come from the corner of Farmers Boulevard in Queens, banging on a garbage can, all the way to the Kennedy Center Honors, that’s a long journey.”
Hip-hop’s presence in the Kennedy Center’s honors continues to grow since 2016 when Q-Tip was named as the artistic director for hip-hop culture.
