There’s no doubt in my mind that J Cole is easily one of the most captivating artists to emerge in recent years. Whether he’s performing in front of an audience or engaging with his fans, the North Carolina rapper is a great storyteller.

Yesterday (July 11th), J Cole’s 4 Your Eyez Only Tour made it’s way to Inglewood’s the fabulous Forum as Cole blessed 17,505 fans with an electrifying performance. But before the evening started, Cole had a few opening acts. Dreamville’s First Lady, Ari Lennox, their newest signee, J.I.D, and longtime labelmates, Bass and Cozz.

By 9:30 or so, it was time for fans to have their wishes granted as J Cole was ready to hit the stage. Soon enough, the lights went off, and a familiar voice was heard through the speakers. Wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, J Cole made his way to the stage which was in the middle of the venue as he was surrounded by police officers. With the words “Property of” on the back of the suit and sitting above a blank white space, Cole graced the stage to start off with “For Whom the Bell Tolls.”

Followed by “Ville Mentality,” which provided the framework for the night’s first monologue; the pros and cons of the “live-for-the-moment mentality.” “It’s an unfortunate mentality to have,” he said, because “you’re not giving yourself the right opportunity to dream and plan for the future.”

J Cole then invited Ari Lennox to the stage once again to perform “Change,” and after that, he picked out a lucky fan to rap along with him one of his day-1 tracks, “Lights Please.” The young fan spit verse after verse as Cole and the crowd cheered her on. He then continued to delight fans with hits like “Nobody’s Perfect” and “Can’t Get Enough,” both of which inspired massive singsongs.
