When festival season comes around, this is probably the time where most of us wish that we had a clone of some sort. With multiple stages and perhaps overlapping times, it makes for some strategic planning and/or simply weighing who you would like to see more.

Plagued with some not so impressive weather, that did not damper any spirits of this year’s showing. As usual and still holding on a positive radiance, Rapsody was the second act of the day to take on the Broccoli Stage, just after Rejjie Snow. Passionate and one of Hip Hop’s most underrated, Rapsody ran through an impressive amount of signature tracks and recent offerings, while giving a needed reminder that women in Hip Hop are just as good, if not better, than some of the guys.

Nick Grant Broccoli City Festival 2017

Next up to bat was Mr. Cool himself, Nick Grant. Kicking off the top of the year with the release of his debut album, Return of the Cool, Nick Grant showed the building crowd just why he’s one of Hip Hop’s more than promising new addition to the genre. Engaging from the time he placed both feet on the stage, until he left, catching another Nick Grant show was surely a mental note that was made by crowd who enjoyed every moment he provided.

Shimmying over to the City Stage, the blkswn creator, Smino, DJ Kool Flash, and hometown hero, Chaz French, had no problem keeping the crowd’s attention and 100% in the moment over the course of almost two hours.

Led off by Smino and his rousing presence, cuts from his debut album sound even better in settings like the Broccoli City Festival. Giving us “Netflix & Dusse” and more, basking in the sounds of Smino brought forth 0 complaints. Taking on a crowd that most people her age might not even attempt, 10 year old DJ Kool Flash let her talents on the turntables do the talking. A pleasant surprise for many of us, we’ll definitely be seeing much more of her in the years to come.

Wrapping things up for this pool of talented individuals, Chaz French reveled in the praises and love of his Washington D.C. people. Dropping welcomed bombs with bangers like “Way Out,” Chaz’s stage presence and positive messages were a true highlight that resonated with what clearly a recurring theme throughout the day.

It all starts and ends at home… Thank you DC! @broccolicity was lit! #SWMU #threesixeight 📽: @nicorefused
