How important is it for you to create material & put on live performances that make people feel beyond the normal, “I liked it,” response?

Sevyn Streeter: I tell my whole life story in these songs. I make sure to start that in the studio. It begins there. I’ll have myself a little drink, get in the booth and tell all my secrets. When I get here with them in person, it’s crazy to see it come to life. I can see how they are when they’re in their car, in their shower, how they connect with the song. I get to see that first hand at the shows. The back and forth is priceless, but that’s why I love to tell my truth in these records.

You’ve already released records like “Prolly” and most recently, “Before I Do.” What can fans expect from Girl Disrupted once it’s out for the world to hear?

Sevyn Streeter: You can expect a song for every experience. Expect a song for every emotion, every up, down, high, low, whatever you go through in your life, because that’s how I wrote it. It took me some time. My album took me through a journey. I learned a lot about myself. Whether I was coming out of a relationship with a breakup, I wrote about it. If I was trying to date again but I wasn’t quite sure if I could trust this guy, but I kind of like him, we came up with songs like “Before I Do.” If I was crushing on someone and felt like they were intoxicating, we came up with songs like “Fallen.” Even “Everything In Me,” which is more of a ballad type of record, that came from an honest place as it talks about someone who did you wrong and it’s taking everything in you not to be petty and do it back to them. So, on the album, there’s a song for every emotion, every experience you have in your life.

Because this is your debut album, did you feel any pressure when putting everything together and creating these records?

Sevyn Stretter: I’ll be real. Yes. You only get one first album. I’ve put out EPs, seven songs here, seven songs there, but we’re talking 11 – 12 songs. I need those songs to tell a certain story as it’s a complete body of work for me. So, is there pressure? Yes. Trying to narrow it down from 22 songs to 11 or 12, I pulled my hair out trying to cut those songs down. The pressure of choosing the right songs, that was something I really wasn’t prepared for, but we did it. Of course, you want your first album to do well, I’ll be honest about that. At the same time, I just want people to connect with the music and I want it to help them how it helped me.

Ending things on a further positive note and being that you have the tour & forthcoming album, what would make 2017 a “winning” year for Sevyn Streeter?

Sevyn Streeter: To have a no. 1 album, I can’t even lie. [laughs] To have a no. 1 album would be amazing. Outside of that, maybe have some no. 1 singles from the album, also.
