This past weekend saw festivities all over the country in light of Memorial Day. While typical hot spots like Miami or Las Vegas hosted some crazy, must-see events, it was Minneapols, Minnesota that had MDW rocking thanks to the 9th annual Soundset Festival.

Put together by the great people at Rhymesayers Entertainment, and hosted by Sway Calloway and Heather B., this year’s show took place at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds for the first time, which was necessary due to the 40,000+ attendees that showed up. With headliners A$AP Rocky, Future and hometown heroes Atmosphere on deck, there was no doubt fans were going to be excited.

With two main stages and two festival tents, there was plenty of music to digest.

The daytime festivities started off swiftly (and on time!) with DJ TIIIIIIIIIIIIP and Blueprint setting things off at the Main Stage, before Murs and 9th Wonder took over. Soon after, Aesop Rock and Homeboy Sandman stepped up to bat, perfectly leading into the bigger names.

The guy who’s been running festival season so far, Anderson .Paak, as well as his group The Free Nationals, did it once again with an emphatic performance. From running around the stage, belting out his prophetic lyrics, to hopping on the drums and showing his other musical abilities, Paak did nothing short of impress the amped up Minneapolis crowd.

Once the Paak party ended, hometown favorite Lizzo took the Main Stage and captured everyone’s attention immediately. Performing passionate songs about equality and being treated well, Lizzo and her lovely dance crew showed up and showed out. While her performance was taking place, upcomer Mick Jenkins set off the Fifth Element Tent and had the young concertgoers chanting each and every word. Impressive, to say the least.

After Lizzo’s Main Stage slaying, the festival kept things midwest for the next two acts — Danny Brown and Machine Gun Kelly. Both artists have insane performing antics (in a good way), such as Danny running back and forth across the stage faster than Usain Bolt, or Kellz hanging upside down from the top of the stage. Yes, those things happened, and yes we were yelling our asses off.

Following MGK’s performance, we hiked back over to the Fifth Elements Tent to see the OG Pharoahe Monch, followed by the newcomer GoldLink, who both brought unique energy to the stage. Following GoldLink was Pouya and Domo Genesis, who made the small-sized tent feel like the Main Stage with the amount of fan excitement.

Over at the Main Stage, another hometown favorite Prof entered the building around 4pm (things are still on time!) and set things off in a major way. From high energy raps to crowd rafting (definition: crowd surfing with a freaking water raft), Prof had the Minnesota State Fairgrounds in a frenzy. Then, it was the legends time.

After Prof was the iconic emcee Common, who reminded the crowd why he’s a menace on the mic. Channeling his 20-year old self, Common even jumped in the crowd for part of the show and participated in all the craziness. Sway took a moment before Common’s set to reminsice on their come-up together. Beautiful moment at Soundset.

Following Common were the final pair of hometown legends, Atmosphere, who for their 9th straight year made their presence at Soundset felt. If you’re from Minnesota, then you know how special it was. And if you’re not, you quickly learned.

Then, the Philly legends The Roots took the stage and kept the nostalgia flowing. Black Thought, Questlove, “Tuba Gooding Jr.” and the rest of the crew brought the funk, the good vibes and everything else imaginable to the show. A much needed set.

Meanwhile at the Fifth Elements Tent, “White Iverson” himself, Post Malone had fans in an uproar before, during and after his set, which was a great segway into the likes of Raury and TDE’s Jay Rock, who both came through with memorable sets.

The final two acts, Future and A$AP Rocky were next up and what a show they put on. Running through his new hits and his old hits, Future had the entire Fairgrounds chanting out every lyric. Accompanied by the Mob (no Ferg, unfortunately), A$AP Rocky ended things on an incredibly high note.

The best part was the very end when “confetti” shot from the sky as Rocky was ending his set. But it wasn’t typical confetti — it was fake $100 bills with the legend A$AP Yams plastered on the front. An incredible way to end an incredible show.
