It’s inevitable that over the course of time, the sounds of R&B will experience a major shift. This theory has proven to be much more prominent in recent years, as we’ve seen sub-genres come to life being deemed Trap&B, as well as neo-soul.

With new sounds comes fresh artists, and despite those afraid of change, there are select few who are dominating in a beautiful way. This brings us to music’s rising sensation, Bryson Tiller. The crooner has been swiftly making his way to people’s playlists, soothing their ears with his melodic voice and unique, vulnerable content matter.

After the release of his hit record, “Don’t,” music fans can’t seem to want more from him. His newest EP, TRAPSOUL, has even quickly become the soundtrack to this year’s “cuffing season,” although some have compared his style to that of PARTYNEXTDOOR and The Weeknd from their debuts within the singing spotlight.

Despite the similar tones that these three may have, Bryson is still standing all on his own with his own signature style. From one listen of TRAPSOUL, many listeners may analyze his sound as being modernized, sprinkling in some 90’s R&B vibes. His heartbreak and infatuation is a bit more raw than a lot of the edgier records being released in the genre today, which is much to his advantage.

His open vulnerability is helpful to his sound, matching up to a similar relatable quality that many 90’s male R&B crooners used within their biggest songs. Bryson shoveling into his emotions is able to draw in the listener, helping to bring out the empathetic attributes of R&B fans. That kind of quality could keep him in the game for the possible next decade, setting him apart from others who are on the same path.

R&B’s major makeover has been years in the making, and Mr. Tiller certainly deserves a shot at being a key contributor to that. It may be early on in the game, being that R&B fans have some serious trust issues, but Bryson’s light is shining right now that isn’t seeing an outage anytime soon. It’s time for the the avid listeners to pass him a torch. Is Bryson Tiller now the new face of R&B? –Lindsey India
